Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces indictment in Springfield Township rape and kidnapping

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Springfield Township resident Cowen Mitchell II (DOB 12/10/77) for the March 28 and 29, 2012 attempted murder, kidnapping, rape and felonious assault of female victim, K.W.  Mitchell is charged with 1 count of Attempt (Murder/Felony 1), 3 counts of Rape (Felony 1), 1 count of Kidnapping (Felony 1) and 1 count of Felonious Assault (Felony 2).  If convicted of all charges, he faces the possibility of 63 years in prison.

On March 28th, Mitchell saw K.W. downtown that morning and invited her back to his home in Springfield Township.  K.W. agreed to go to his home and, along with his 3-year-old daughter, rode in his car back to his home at 1284 Compton Road.

Soon after arriving at the Mitchell residence, the defendant put a towel over K.W.’s eyes and gagged her and tied her arms behind her back and tied her legs together.  He put her in a garage/basement closet and laid her on a mattress. Mitchell kept the victim in this closet and sexually assaulted her until she was able to escape.

On the morning of March 29th, Mitchell said that he was leaving the residence and told K.W. to be quiet.   Before he left, he placed a plastic garbage bag over her head and secured it around her neck with tape. He also placed other objects on top of her which not only made breathing difficult, but restricted her movements.  When the house became quiet and the victim thought that Mitchell had left the residence, she bit through the garbage bag in an attempt to breathe.  Once she could breathe again, she was able to loosen her bindings and use her feet and body to push on the locked closet door until it opened.  She was then able to raise the garage door and escape to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor called the police.

K.W. suffered injuries including bruises, scratches, and ligature marks.

Prosecutor Deters commented, “This is straight out of a horror movie. Thankfully she was able to free herself from what would have become her death bed.”
